  8th Bellapais International Music Festival (May-June 2004)The North Cyprus 8th International Bellapais Music Festival is set to begin on Friday May 21. The opening concert, at Bellapais Monastery, is set to start 9.00 pm. Flautist Maris Geras and the Çukurova Symphony Orchestra perform on the opening night. The festival organized by the Music Foundation will feature singers and orchestras from the North Cyprus, Turkey, UK, Russia, Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Azerbaijan and Hungary.

The festival runs until June 21 – World Music Day – when there will be a grand closing concert by The Symphonic Band of Turkish Armed Forces North Cyprus-Turkey, with the North Cyprus’s well-known “home-grown” piano talent, Rüya Taner, as soloist.

Among the leading names of classical music from around the world set to gather for the Bellapais event, will be British violinist, Anya Birchall, who will be accompanied by pianist Rosie Richardson on May 24.

The following day will see a band concert by the musicians of the Cyprus Turkish Peacekeeping Forces.

Russian pianist Eugene Mogilevski will take stage on May 27, and the German student of world-famous baritone Placido Domingo, Ivo Berkenbusch, will appear on May 31

On June 3, there will be a performance by a renowned New Zealand accordion quartet, followed on June 7 by the Hungarian duo of Monica Egri and Atilla Pertis, with their piano recital 'Four Hands'.

Turkish-Cypriot flautist Sonat Sözer will play on June 10, accompanied by Azerbaijani pianist Gülnare Ibrahimova, and on June 14 there will be a concert by Turkish pianist Burçin Büke.

The Aylwin String Quartet – made up of members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Richard Aylwin (violin), Ruth Hudson (violin), Amanda Denley (viola) and Janice Brodie (cello) – will take the stage on June 17.

One of the sponsors of the festival, The North Cyprus Hotel Associations (KITOB), will publish a special festival catalogue of the event. The cover page of the catalogue, designed by Hikmet Uluçam, features a photo taken by North Cyprus President Rauf R. Denktaş.

All concerts start at 9pm. Tickets cost 10 million TL and are available from the Green Jacket Bookshop (Kyrenia), Oya Laboratory (Nicosia) and at the Bellapais Abbey ticket office or on the door. Admission to the concert on 25 May is free.
