The island of
Cyprus was a territory of the Ottoman Empire administered
by Great Britain during (1878-1924) under the 1878 Convention of
Cyprus.
The
island remained under the nominal sovereignty of the Ottoman
Empire until it was formally annexed in 1914 and given the
status of a British crown colony in 1924 until the
establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 16 August 1960.
