Turkish-Cypriot musician (guitarist and composer). Born in London to a Cypriot
parents, Kavaz came to Cyprus in 1978, and since then has got the Pan-Cyprian
virus of being an islander, which is reflected pervasively in his songs.
Kavaz started his musical involvement with the Has-Der Cypriot Folk Artists
Association at a young age. Then he started working with the Cypriot musicians
Acar Akalin, Ali Hoca and Tanju Hoca who have had big influences on his work.
In 1978, he also gave his first recital at the Ataturk Cultural Centre, in Nicosia.
This became the turning moment in Kavaz's life, as he decided to pursue an education
in music majoring in classical guitar. Accordingly, he was trained first by
Ali Hoca, then Tanju Hoca and finally by Akalin, before he started his musical
higher education.
Kavaz later studuied at London's prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama
under the tutorship of Professor Antonio Albanez, and then at Gazi University
Faculty of Music and Performing Arts where he majored in classical guitar. It
was during this period that he started producing his first compositions of music.
His firt composition "Ne olur kar$ilik ver sevgime" was followed by the
composition of one of Acar Akalin's poems. Kavaz later developed an interest in
putting the works of the Cypriot poets (Acar Akalin,
Süleyman Uluçamgil, Bülent
Fevzioglu, Ahmet Okan and Fikret Demirag) on musical notes. His purpose in this,
he says is to promote the Cypriot poets' works as well as his and Cyprus' music.
Although his early music tented to be on romantic tunes, he now composes more
lively music reflecting his joie de vivre. This is more visible in his
latest songs "Soguk gecelerde" and "Sanoda".
