Cartoonist
and dental surgeon. Born in Famagusta, in 1937.
Gökçe's interest in drawing cartoons
began while he was at high school. He started to draw cartoons for his school
magazine, and later started a small circulation cartoons magazine Cizgi which
to date remains the earliest collection of Turkish Cypriot cartoons. One of
his early supporters in his art was his teacher Mr Ihsan Uhri.
He later went to Turkey, where he studied dentistry. Upon his return to Cyprus
he settled in his native Famagusta where he practiced dentistry and continued to draw
his cartoons, published in the major papers in North Cyprus.
During the years of 1964-65 he also published together with his other cartoonist
colleagues the Karga satire magazine where he published his cartoons. His
cartoons have also been published and included in many albums in Turkey, Belgium,
Germany, Italy, Japan and Ukraine.
The artist was a member of the European Cartoonists Federation and a founding
member of the Cyprus Turkish Cartoonists Association. Gökçe also won several
awards for his work, latest of which is the 1989 award for his cartoon titled
"Health". Gökçe died in
2001.
