Phoenicians and the nature of their earliest ventures overseas
are two controversial issues that lack satisfactory
archaeological data. The working hypothesis of this paper is
that Phoenician colonial activities had started in the early
12th century B.C. and were already well established by the end
of the 1Oth century B.C. Re-evaluation of both old and new
discoveries indicates that a long but steady process initiated
by Levantine diaspora on Cyprus was followed, i.a., by permanent
Phoenician posts on Crete in order to expand their trade routes
beyond the Aegean as far as Sardinia in the west.

IS: 0040-1625 AB: This study formulates a model of the
macrodynamics of international migration using a differential
equation to capture the push-pull forces that propel it. The
model's architecture rests on the functioning of information
feedback between settled friends and family at the destination
and potential emigrants at the origin. The intensity of the
ensuing migratory flow is determined by a nexus of mediators
prevailing in either society and comprising (a) legal
prerogatives such as migration laws, (b) economic prerogatives
measured by the ratio of income per capita between destination
and origin, (c) political prerogatives such as war or other
forms of compulsion, (d) natural stimulants such as climatic
extremes and epidemics, (e) societal conditions such as
job-hierarchy differences and network characteristics, and (f)
causes other than the ones motivating the pool members, such as
the reasons for the so-called "brain drain." The
mathematical entity thus constructed is named the mediating
factor, and features both steady-state and transient components
that are accommodated by the model. While the model's
architecture is independent of any geographic or temporal
specificity, the model is capable of portraying migration flow
between any given origin/destination pair and over any
designated historical period-this through the numerical values
of the model parameters derived from the historical,
demographic, and economic data of the case. Two specific
paradigms of diverse nature serve to demonstrate the model's
tenets and pertinence, one being Greek emigration tot the United
States since 1820, and the other total out-migration from Cyprus
since statehood (1946). KP: DETERMINANTS, MODELS, PERSPECTIVES,

soldiers in Cyprus (UNFICYP) have been investigated with respect
to their demographic background and motives for application for
UN service. The comparison of symptoms of stress in general, of
posttraumatic stress disorder specifically, and some other
variables of reaction with various studies of Swedish UN
soldiers in different settings has given the following results.
Very few interviewees experienced 'personal nervous breakdown'
(0.5%). The soldiers reported in general very few psychological
or psychosomatic complaints in the short time perspective. There
seemed, however, to be two groups of persons at risk, namely
those who were repatriated and those with a high consumption of
alcohol. KP: SOUTH LEBANON WA: UN SERVICE, CYPRUS, MILITARY

0091-7710 AB: The recent discovery of a pit containing figurines
and a building model at the Chalcolithic site of
Kissonerga-Mosphilia in Cyprus sheds important new light on our
understanding of fertility and birthing rituals before the
Bronze Age. Although figurines of similar type have been found
in Cyprus and elsewhere in the Mediterranean prior to the
discovery of the Kissonerga deposit, their precise functions
have often remained elusive on account of their fragmentary
state and unstratified find contexts. Close scrutiny of the
contents and context of this deposit has yielded a wealth of
information regarding the use and function of the objects it
contained and enables us to make important inferences regarding
their ritual use. In addition, ethnographic studies of
traditional fertility and birthing ritual allow us to amplify
these inferences by providing a cross-cultural framework for the
interpretation of their social and cultural significance.
