Your Web site is very informative, but may I
suggest that you include
details of Car Hire companies, with their contact numbers.
I am coming to visit in June and I wish to arrange car hire.
Thank you for a most interesting web site.

Hi Yasar;
I'm an MBA student in the States. I have an idea to establish a web
site
about Turkish and Greek hostility on net. Although we Turks treat these
Greek b...rds with hospitality and lattitude, their hostility against
us
growing more and more everyday. This is very obvious in your site's
"comments" section. What I wanted to ask you is if you can help
me in
establishing this site by giving me some names of sources to
achieve my
goal. (Another sites, some objectives writers' books about Cyprus...etc.
By the way I want to congratulate you about your site, I strongly believe
that it is very useful and helpful for us to proove world that
we are not wrong
about that intervention.
Best Wishes

I have a friend in Northern Cyprus and he had written me a postcard

It may come
from my appearence and from the fact that I am Hungarian.

Hi,
My name is Sencan Hasan and I just went through the information on Cyprus.
I just thought I'd congratulate you on such a good job.
I don't think that most people in Cyprus are aware that there is so
much information about the
TRNC on the Net.
Good luck and it would be nice if some information could be up-dated,
i.e.: news items they are
dated from 1996. Maybe Kibris Gazetesi could get more up-dated

Subject: getting to North cyprus
Hello,
have you thought about putting a travelling to North Cyprus
tips on
your net pages?
I am interested in Visiting North Cyprus preferably as cheaply
as
possible .Last year i was in Side and i was told by a travel agent
that
there were flights every day from Antalaya to Ercan at around
$60(dollars not gb£) .Do you know about this route?I know during
the
summer that there is a Hydrofoil for around £gb50
I know a few companies run package holidays to North
Cyprus...president Holidays etc but no company seems to offer flight
only.I realise that you have to go to Turkey first so the fare
is
unlikely to less than £200 ...or can you advise something different.
i enjoyed the page...keep up the good work!!

comments=Dear Yasar and all who has been interested enough to
Cyprus has never ever been Greek and there were no more than 30,000 Greeks
on the Island with over l00,000 Turks
when the Island was leased to the British in l878. Within 15 years
over 500 000 Greeks had been imported into Cyprus from
Greece with the Turks forcing to emigrate - thus the plan of the
British to make sure that the Island would be handed back to her
rightful owner Ottoman Empire than which subsequently became Turkey
with the enemy from within was realised. Important fact to
note at this stage is that Cyprus belonged to Turkey for over 300
years until l878. As events showed the Greeks in fact
turned against the British as well and massacred British soldiers
as well as British women and children in thousands in
their attempt to realise their dream of Enosis Union with Greece.
In order however for this to happen they also had to exterminate
the Turks in Cyprus and thousands of Turks were also viciously murdered.
One thing our Greek friends are right about is that the whole world
stood by whilst the Turks were being killed - was it perhaps
because they were Moslems Was the Turkish massacres part of
a larger plan. One thing is for sure the Greeks had the
best deal by the signing of the l960 Treaty which for the first
time gave them rights on Cyprus albeit not full rights but
this unfortunately was not enough and between l963 to l974 massacres
continued with the UN doing nothing except watching as they did in
Bosnia. The hatred of the Greeks is clearly visible even from the
messages that they send by their continuing attacks on the
Turks now through the borders and it is crystal clear that
they do not accept the existence of the Turks in Cyprus. One
thing the whole world ESPECIALLY OUR GREEK FRIENDS cannot deny
is that there are Turks in Cyprus and they are entitled to have rights
no less than their enemy who is trying to destroy them.
If the Greek motherland imposes and forces the rest of the Christian world
not to recognise TRNC if Turkish Cypriots suffer because of
the economical sanctions that have been put on them by Europe whilst the
Greek side enjoy the financial aid given to Cyprus but which is kept by
the Greeks.
THE WHOLE WORLD SHOULD BE ASHAMED BECAUSE THEY ARE CONTINUING
TO PUNISH THE VICTIMS WHILST THE CRIMINALS ARE REWARDED. WHETHER RECOGNISED
OR NOT - TURKISH CYPRIOTS EXIST AND THEY WILL SURVIVE. THEY HAVE NEVER
BEEN CONQUERED AND NEVER WILL BE AND IT IS ABOUT TIME THE WHOLE WORLD
UNDERSTOOD THIS AND STOPPED DENYING THEM THEIR BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS.
All matters mentioned here can be checked from the Colonial Office
in London. Yasar - Well done Proud of you lot. Keep up the Good Work and
ignore the enemy’s hostile and unreasonable messages. What
else can they do. Her hangi bir seye ihtiyac olursa her zaman yardima

Link Çekebilirsiniz?
Merhaba,
http://www.yildiz.edu.tr/~teymur/siirler/siirhome.html

kullanabiliriz. Ýsterseniz "logosiir.gif" resmini kendi sitenize kopyalayýp
kullanabilirsiniz. Fakat bunu tavsiye etmem, çünkü orijinal hali ile
kullanýldýðýnda, logo deðiþecek olursa, sayfanýza baðlanan kiþiler,
sizin ekstra bir iþlem yapmanýza
gerek kalmadan yeni logoyu göreceklerdir.

Dear Friends,
Firstly, may I congratulate you on this excellent web-site -the
best I have come across, and wish you lot every success, and patience
to actually keep it going. It must be hard work!
I would just like to let you know that I live in North London
(Highbury),
and that I feel the same way as you with regards the Cyprus issue.
Therefore, I would appreciate it if you could let me know when ever you needed any
sort of help with absolutely anything!! I would love to be of some help
to you lot.
Furthermore, I hope to keep in contact with you brothers more
frequently as I am actively involved with the Turkish/Turkish Cypriot community here
in London, and wish to maintain contact with people I feel are special.
PLEASE DO NOT FORGET THIS (BELOW) :
On May - 3rd (Sunday) there will be a Flower Exhibition held at a place
in Spalding. It is the largest flower show in the UK.
We (HORNSEY TURKISH SCHOOL), have been told by the TRNC representative office (Embassy
to be more precise) to go and dance folklor there. Last year,
when we went, TRNC
flags were put onto the flag poles which was a feeling that I thought
I would never experience here. The Greeks, as usual are apparently
protesting but the show is to take place, and so will our flag take place on
those flag poles. THEREFORE, IF YOU ARE NEAR THERE/ OR WOULD
LIKE TO GO, PLEASE LET ME KNOW, AND I WILL E-MAIL THE EXACT LOCATION OF THIS EVENT TO YOU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. This would be an excellent place
for us to meet, if possible. And anyway we would
not mind some support from you guys!! I am waiting for a response my friend.
KEEP IN TOUCH KARDESH

Hi.
There is a link on your site to a Web Page
about mediveal music from Cyprus. But, when I
attempt to access the music samples on this page,
I cannot do so.
Do you have any idea if this music still
can be found somewhere at another site? Or,
do you know how to contact the creators of that
web site?
Thanks for any help. I found the writing
on that page about music in Cyprus to be
fascinating, and I would like to hear the

Hello,
you have a great site with a lot of information
Do you know from which age you can rent and drive a motorbike in Cyprus
?
In Belgium you need an additional drivers license for bikes and you
have to
be 21 years old to drive a motorbike.
We would like to know if we could rent bikes during a holiday in Cyprus
and
if our son of 18 years old could drive his own bike ?

too.
We greeks from Greece and all over the world will never stop fighting
with greek-cypriots for justice and for the return of
all stolen properties of greek-cypriots and a conviction of all the
people who were leaders of this invasion. Turkey will never
be a member of the European Union as long as it ignores the cypriot
issue and continues threatening the eastern islands of
Greece. We fought for this land for about 4000 years and we are ready
to fight you back for another 4000 as long as you
continue these politics of invading Cyprus in 1974 and now wanting
to invade Greece and the greek seas. I feel sorry for both
Turks and turkish-cypriots living in such poverty because some military
pigs rule the country buying more and more weapons
for their games when people are almost starving. I hope someday a true
democracy is going to rise in Turkey letting it become
a truly european country away from military dictatorship thirld-world
standards. Only then all the greek-turkish problems
and the cyprtiot too are going to be solved. Until then watch out.
Greeks will never die.

Hi. Not much time to write right now, unfortunately.
I'm working at a summer camp in Maine called Seeds of Peace with a group
of Turkish Cypriot kids. I want to give them a list of Internet Service Providers that they can call when they return home to Cyprus. Do you
have the latest info on which are the best and least expesnive ISP's
in northern Cyprus? It would be much appreciated if you could point me
in the right direction.
Thanks,
Aaron Naparstek

Hello my name is Antonis Stylianou and I am a Cypriot.
I would like to say a few things. I was reading the comments that people wrote about
your page and I think that it is a disgrace that both Greek and Turkish Cypriots are calling names each other and what is really
disappointing is that most of these people are supposed to be educated. Some
of the things you have on your page I don't agree with either, but internet
is the perfect way to open the communication lines that separated Cypriots for the last 24 years. Instead these people only spread hate.
One last
thing to anybody that insists that Cyprus is Turkish or Greek,
Cyprus belongs to Cypriots and nobody else. Read history and you will understand that our Greek or Turkish cultural heritage does not make
us an extension of these two countries. People like you are not
part of the solution but part of the problem. I hope at least that most
of the Cypriots want a united independent Cyprus away from both Turkey and Greece. Remember a close mind is a good thing to lose.
Thank you

Could you tell me how well the internet is distributed in Northern Cyprus,
i.e. how many people have access to the internet. Is it mainly students and large
companies?
Thank-you and best regards,

My name is George Kiayias born in Famagusta and raised in the southern
part of Cyprus for most of my life. I have just went through your homepage and saw some pictures taken from the northern part of Cyprus
and was quite moved to remember the places which I used to visit as
a child and spend time with friends and relatives. The Mimoza Hotel,
for example, which is advertized in your homepage, belonged to a very good friend of my family who actually died a couple of years ago in
Limassol.
What can I say ? The world is strange but the willingness for both
of us to live in peace and harmony is definitely there.
I wish all the best for this island hoping that our leaders and the
weapon-industry stop making us hate one another.
Good luck to us !

Subject: An opinon on your economy page
Date: Sun, 26 Jul 1998 14:25:26 +0300
I recently took a look at your page at
http://salamis.emu.edu.tr/~senturk/currency.html,
regarding information on The T.R.N.C. Central Bank and some local banking data.
Although the information you offer on the said page is a lot more than
is available elsewhere, the information given is now outdated regarding the required reserve rate on foreign currency (now at %18), and the
number of off-shore and on-shore banks.
More importantly, the data seems to specific for an outsider to
understand. For example, many people will not know about Polly
Peck, and might even feel insecure about the banking system in Cyprus, after reading that the Central Bank' funds were frozen for any reason, at
a time in the past. Since your article is one of few available,
one could not even explore further into some details you mention, to get a complete picture.
Also, the rates of the Turkish Central Bank are not passed on to the
local banks via the T.R.N.C. Central Bank. In fact the either
Bank's official rates are no longer relevant except for some minor
technicalities. The Money and Exchange Law (Para ve Kambiyo)
should offer more insight into the matter.
Again, your reference to the two troubled Bank's, both of which are
now back in operation (not one as your article suggest) helps to complete
a very dark picture of the banking system.
A brief introduction page such as yours should include only realistic
but also optimistic data, so as to lend an attractive view of our young economy. For example, mentioning all deposits are under deposit
insurance up till 7,000 sterling or equivalent would have been more relevant and optimistic. If your intention is to go into specific
details, it would be best to go into full detail, and give a complete picture as to the outcome.
Otherwise I find your site very informative in general and easy to get
around. If I or our institution can be of any service to your
organization regarding the banking system in North Cyprus, please feel free to contact me at
mete@iktisatbank.cc
Also feel free to visit our site at http://www.iktisatbank.cc,
and give us your opininon.

Subject: HotelView link confirmation
Dear HotelView Link Partner:
Thank you for participating in our link exchange program, we hope all
is
well. This is just a note to indicate we have, as previously agreed,
added
a hyperlink from http://www.hotelview.com
to your Web site.
As a confirmation of a functioning HotelView link on your Web site,
we request
that you respond to this email with the location of the HotelView URL
on
your site.
Simply copy and paste the page URL where the HotelView link appears
on your
site into a return email along with the title of your site and we'll
verify
that the reciprocal link exchange process has been completed on your
end.
We would appreciate your prompt response in this matter. If we
don't hear
from you within 2 weeks, we will assume you no longer wish to participate
in the program.
Once again, we would like to remind you that that the free exchange
of
hyperlinks is a cost-efficient method to increase Web site exposure
and
we certainly hope you recognize this as well with your timely reply.
Thank you for your time and cooperation in this matter. We look forward
to hearing from you soon.

thank you very much for pointing out the wrong information contained
in the entry about turgay himli on the "Music from North Cyprus" website.
The text in the site was taken from a news cutting from the Kibris
newspaper and translated into English. I would be more than happy
to amend and correct it with the correct information you provide.
Would it be possible if you could send me the information you would
like me to amend/update/correct via email, as I live in the UK?

Hi Yashar,
I?m sorry, Turgay is in Cyprus now - and very busy, I know. He was here
for a
visit when he wrote to you.
I?ll send him your message by telefax, so he will get it at home.
He himself
has neither internet-account nor e-mail.
Nevertheless you may use the telephone-number Turgay had given
(0392-8535341). At the moment you will fetch him there (if
a distance-call
UK-Cyprus is not too expensive??.....). In the other case you may hold contact
via my e-mail account..
Best wishes and a nice week!!

While staying there I'd like to get to Israel for short time. I found

send

Thank you.

Subject: Question
Gentlemen:
I was wondering if a certain service is available through
one of your
client companies or your "government".
I was trying to locate some of the Turkish Cypriots I grew
up with in
the area of Paphos, and was wondering if a
directory of any kind is currently
in existence to bring me
in touch with them. How would someone get in touch with
a person he knew prior to the invasion without their
lives
being at risk from the "Democratic" regime established after
74.
If they would be at any risk, I would not like to continue
this effort.
I know from past experience that the military
presence there is not a joke, and
I personally witnessed the
execution of two Turkish Cypriot soldiers
on the border while
I was serving the national guard of Cyprus. Even
then, their
only crime was asking me where I was from and if I had any
spare cigarettes.
When he overheard the conversation, their commanding
officer shot both
of them on the head and threw their bodies
in his jeep.
I need to make clear that this message is not a
challenge to a battle
of words or another effort on my
part to question your authorities. (I
already have enough
practice in that arena and in more effective ways).
I'm
trying to exercise an honest effort to locate childhood
friends that
I grew up with and for who I have a genuine
interest to get in touch with.
If this is a possibility I would
appreciate your feedback.
Thanks in advance,
Evangelos C. Eleftheriou

Like it or not, Cyprus will join the EUROPEAN UNION, and the
internationally recognised and legal Government of the Republic of
Cyprus will represent the whole geographic area of Cyprus.
The European policies will simply be applied in the areas

Republic which are under the Government control. You will
remain in
the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus , isolated , as usual,
the way you have chosen to do.
Since Europe is following a path of deepening integration, and,
in the long-run a Federal Europe is the objective, Turkey will not
only
be occuping part of Cyprus, but part of Europe.
The time will come when the tables will turn, and your greatest allie,
the ones who made you as you are, (the one who created the monster),
the USA will become your biggest nemy. They (USA) are the ones who
will
finally destroy you, and you will be CRYING for mercy.
To save yourselves , you will start baptising yourselves Greek Orthodox,
and the Turkish State and nation will cease to exist. Some will
migrate
back to central Asia where you originated....because this land does
not
know you.....you are foreign to it.
PS- most of you Turkish cypriots have Greek blood. Your ancestors
converted to islam during the ottoman occupation to avoid paying
taxes....since moslems did not have to , while christians did.
Look at LOUROUJINA for example, a Turkish cypriot village where
no one
spoke turkish.......ever wonder why?

in Paralimni I saw perfectly the two big flags painted on the

this it would be easy to decide

Subject: Regarding Cyprus
Date: Sat, 21 Nov 1998 22:50:36 +0200
Dear sir,
I recently came across your website as I was browsing, and I
must say I was astonished by what I saw. I have spent a lot of time browsing
and studying carefully what you have written in respect of the island of
Cyprus.I studied thoroughly the comments and letters people have sent to
you in the past years and I would like to share my thoughts with them about
some of your references, if you of course allow it. In the best of my knowledge
events regarding the history of the island did not quite occur the way
you present them and especially the involvement of the Greeks, which deliberately
you have not mentioned in your publication, they inhabitant the island
in 1400bc and came from Arcadia. I will use extraction's written
by historical analysts which state the were the actual location of the
island the same way you do, but emphasising the rest after the introduction
regarding the history of the island.
Cyprus, republic, and third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea,
located west of Syria and south of Turkey. The island has a maximum length
of about 225 km (about 140 mi) from Cape Andreas in the Northeast to the
western extremity of the island. Its maximum width, from Cape Gata in the
south to Cape Kormakiti in the north, is about 97 km (about 60 mi). The
total area of the country is 9251 sq km (3572 sq mi). Nicosia is the capital
and largest city. Since 1974 the northern third of Cyprus has been occupied
by Turkish troops and has formed a separate-though officially unrecognised-state
called the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Greek-speaking Cypriots
make up about 80 percent of the population. About 18 percent of the population
is of Turkish extraction, and the remainder is made up of Armenians and
other ethnic groups. Both the Greek and Turkish communities retain the
customs, and to a great extent, the national identity of their traditions
on the mainland. Since the Turkish invasion in 1974 mass migrations of
Greeks and Turks have taken place, so that now the two groups are geographically
separated. The Greek Cypriots occupy the southern two-thirds of the island
and the Turkish Cypriots occupy the northern third. The people are predominantly
farmers who work the land surrounding their villages. The combined population
of the Greek and Turkish sectors (1991 estimate) is about 708,000. The
overall population density is about 77 persons per sq km (about 198 per
sq mi). The principal city is Nicosia, the capital, with an estimated 1991
population of 166,500 for the Greek Cypriot zone and an estimated 1989
population of 39,496 in the Turkish zone. Limassol (population, 1991 estimate,
129,700), Larnaca (59,600), and Famagusta (20,516) are the chief ports.
Members of the Greek community adhere to the Church of Cyprus, which is
in doctrinal agreement with the Eastern Orthodox church, but is independent
and has no allegiance to any patriarch. The archbishop primate, who is
bishop of Nicosia, and the three other bishops of the Cypriot church are
elected by the church membership. The Turkish minority is mostly Muslim.
Other small religious groups include Maronites (Christian Arabs), Roman
Catholics, and Jews. Greek and Turkish are the official languages and are
taught in schools and used in broadcasting. English is widely spoken in
the main towns. Cypriot Greek, although related to the language of the
Greek mainland, is a dialect believed by language scholars to resemble
more closely the speech of ancient Greece than any modern Greek dialect.
Separate educational systems are maintained by the Greek-speaking and Turkish-speaking
communities. Greek Cypriot education is administered by the Ministry of
Education. Six years of elementary education are free and compulsory for
all children between the ages of 5 and 11, and six years of secondary school
are provided. In the late 1980s Greek Cypriot elementary schools each year
had about 56,500 pupils enrolled, and Greek Cypriot secondary schools had
about 38,800. Higher education is provided by the University of Cyprus
(1988) and by teacher-training, technical, and vocational schools. Turkish
Cypriot education is administered by the so called Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus. The illiteracy rate for both communities is low.
The economy of Cyprus is predominantly agricultural. Manufacturing and
services are also important. After the fighting of 1974 divided the island,
the economy suffered, but the Greek sector showed a rapid recovery. In
the late 1980s, annual budget figures showed about $782 million in revenue
and $901 million in expenditure in the Greek sector and $120 million in
revenue and expenditure in the Turkish sector. In theory the government
of Cyprus is based on a 1960 constitution that apportioned power between
the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities according to their relative
populations. In 1963 and 1964, however, the Turkish Cypriots withdrew from
the government. The institutions of the government continued to function
with few changes, but their authority was limited in most respects to the
Greek Cypriot community. In 1974, after Cypriot forces led by Greek officers
overthrew Cyprus's president, Turkey invaded Cyprus and won control of
the northern third of the country. In 1975 the Turkish Federated State
of Cyprus was established in northern Cyprus; its constitution (1975),
as amended, provides for a popularly elected president, a 50-member unicameral
legislative assembly, and a system of independent courts. The Turkish sector
in November 1983 unilaterally declared itself to be the independent Turkish
Republic of Northern Cyprus, although the United Nations (UN) has refused
to recognise the state. The chief executive under the 1960 constitution
is a Greek Cypriot president, elected by the Greek Cypriot community for
a five-year term; the constitution calls for the Turkish Cypriot community
to elect the vice president. The constitution vests legislative power in
a House of Representatives to be composed of 35 Greek Cypriots and 15 Turkish
Cypriots. The Greek Cypriot government continues to abide by the 1960 constitution
when feasible, despite the lack of participation by the Turkish Cypriot
community. In 1985 the number of Greeks in the legislature increased from
35 to 56. Since the mid-1970s, the Turkish Cypriots have had their own
so called< president> and legislative institutions. The chief
towns are administered by municipal corporations. Smaller towns are governed
by commissions made up of a headman (mukhtar) and a body of elders (azas).
Under reforms instituted in 1964, the legal system in the Greek Cypriot
community is headed by a supreme court. Lesser tribunals include assize
courts and district courts. A supreme court and subordinate courts have
also been established in the Turkish sector. The Greek Cypriot and Turkish
Cypriot communities have separate military organisations, the former aided
by Greece, the latter by Turkey, which maintains 27,000 troops on the island.
The UN stationed a peacekeeping force on Cyprus in 1963; in the mid-1980s
this force totalled some 2000 members.
HISTORY OF THE ISLAND
According to archaeological investigation and conjecture, the aboriginal
inhabitants of Cyprus were Indo-European people who had a written language.
Extensive excavation has shown that during the Neolithic and Bronze ages
the Cypriots had an advanced civilisation. Please note the following paragraph:
Early History The recorded history of Cyprus begins with the occupation
of part of the island by Egypt about or just before 1450 BC, during the
reign of Thutmose III. In subsequent centuries seafaring and trading peoples
from the Mediterranean countries set up scattered settlements along the
coasts. The first Greek colony is believed to have been founded by traders
from Arcadia about 1400 BC. The Phoenicians began to colonise the island
about 800 BC. Beginning with the rise of Assyria during the 8th century
BC, Cyprus was under the control of each of the empires that successively
dominated the eastern Mediterranean. Assyrian authority was followed by
Egyptian occupation (550 BC), then Persian (525 BC). During the Persian
occupation King Evagoras I, ruler of the Cypriot city of Salamis, made
the first recorded attempt to unify the city-states of Cyprus. In 391 BC
Evagoras, with the aid of Athens, led a successful revolt against Persia
and temporarily made himself master of the island. Shortly after his death,
however, Cyprus again became a Persian possession. For almost a thousand
years thereafter control of the island passed from empire to empire. Alexander
the Great took Cyprus from Persia in 333 BC, and after his death in 323
BC the island again became an Egyptian possession, under the Ptolemies.
Rome gained control in 58 BC. In 1191 Cyprus was seized by Richard I of
England, who gave it to Guy of Lusignan, titular king of Jerusalem. The
Lusignan dynasty built several large forts and castles, some of which are
still standing. In 1489, Venice took control of Cyprus. Turkey captured
the island in 1571, please note that this is almost 3000 years after
the Greeks landed on the island and held it until 1878, when it was
defeated in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 and 1878. Fearing greater expansion
by Russia, Turkey induced the British to administer Cyprus. The only reason
I'm referring to this extraction's is to give a better picture than the
one you tried to show without even referring to the whole history o the
island and especially the Greek influence on the island amongst others,
not only the Turkish that as history shows came only to conquer the island, and
not to inhabit as the Greeks did at the early beginning of the history
of the island.
To get nearer to the events of modern history until today please note
the following:
In June 1958 the British announced a plan to maintain the international
status quo of Cyprus for seven years but to establish representative government
and communal autonomy. Archbishop Makarios and the Greek and Turkish governments
rejected the British plan, but on October 1 the British put a modified
version of it into effect. Talks held in 1959 among the various parties
led to an agreement on the general features of a constitution for an independent
republic of Cyprus. The status of the republic was guaranteed by Great
Britain, Turkey, and Greece. Great Britain retained sovereignty over two
military bases. Archbishop Makarios, who returned to Cyprus on March 1,
was elected president on December 13; Fazil Küchük, a Turkish
Cypriot, became vice president. Independence was proclaimed on August 16,
1960. Cyprus was admitted to the United Nations and the Commonwealth of
Nations. In December 1963, Greek and Turkish Cypriots clashed after Makarios
proposed constitutional changes, including abolition of the Turkish minority's
power to veto laws in the legislature. Fighting spread over the island,
with the Turkish Cypriots demanding partition while the Greek Cypriots
insisted on a unitary state with minority rights safeguarded. After both
Greece and Turkey threatened to intervene, full-scale civil war was forestalled
by British troops; the UN appointed a mediator and organised a peace force
to patrol the island. Acceptance of a UN resolution calling for a cease-fire
on August 10, 1964, ended sharp fighting between the factions. Subsequent
UN efforts to bring about a settlement failed, and bitterness between Greece
and Turkey continued to increase. Makarios was re-elected president in
1968 and 1973. Renewed tension in the early 1970s culminated on July 15,
1974, when Makarios was ousted from office and forced into exile by members
of the Cypriot national guard who opposed his reluctance to unite the island
with Greece. The national guard, which had close ties with the Greek government,
installed Nikos Sampson, a newspaper publisher, as president, but he was
replaced on July 23 by Glafkos Clerides, president of the Cyprus House
of Representatives, after Turkish forces landed on the island. By late
August, following fighting that left many people homeless, the Turks controlled
the northern third of the island. In December Makarios returned to Cyprus
and assumed the presidency. On February 13, 1975, a semi-independent Turkish
Cypriot state was proclaimed in the Turkish-held sector. In April 1975
intermittent talks began under UN auspices to create a federal system with
Greek and Turkish zones. The talks continued after Makarios died in 1977
and was succeeded by Spyros Kyprianou, who was re-elected in February 1983.
In November 1983 Rauf R. Denktash, and allow me to say the so called
Turkish Cypriot president, proclaimed his community an independent republic
called the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" which only turkey
recognised suspending all talks.George Vassiliou defeated Clerides and
Kyprianou in the 1988 presidential elections. UN-sponsored talks resumed
on an intermittent basis in 1988. In 1991 the UN passed a resolution urging
the creation of a federal state made up of two politically equal communities.
Cyprus hosted the Non-aligned Movement Conference in February 1992 and
urged closer ties with Western countries. In the 1993 elections Vassiliou
lost his presidential seat to Clerides, the candidate of the right-wing
Democrat Rally party. In 1994 the European Union, dedicated to a unified
Cyprus, ruled that all exports from Cyprus must have authorisation from
the official government, in effect banning direct trade with the" TRNC".
Later that year, the Turkish Cypriots passed two resolutions calling for
the "TRNC" to co-ordinate its defence and foreign policy with that of Turkey
and to demand political equality and additional autonomy from Greek Cyprus.
In 1995 negotiations regarding Cyprus's entrance into the European Union
were under way and we saw recently some more developments taking place
about this issue of certain European countries opposing the entrance of
Cyprus in the European union. As you understand I had to refer to all this
as in your site you mentioned them without again giving the whole true
story, and I believe in an unbiased true presentation of the history as
occurred and was written by historical analysts, and what I did was just
to extract them from well known encyclopaedias, which is a good way to
get informed about something, in a correct way. As mention above
my intention is not to give a history lesson to you, or anyone else but
I like things to be set in the correct manner. The last thing I would like
to comment is where you mention the Turkish invasion and not intervention
as you would like to call it in the island in 1974, that left 200000 people
without homes, 1619 missing persons, including members of my family,
wounded, raped women, and orphans and all the rest that came after the
invasion. Countries that intervened in foreign soil, as we saw in modern
history either was wrong or write, when in and out of those countries after
the solution was found, forced or agreed or anything else you would like
to call it, and did not held them as hostages for 24 years, stealing their
land, renaming their towns and villages, and declaring false republics,
and even killing innocent soldiers standing guards in the bloody green
line which divide the island since 1974. I never saw the occupied part
of Cyprus because I was very young and I do not remember that part very
well but it is very unfair to be able to travel all over the world, and
not my own country.
I hope one day that Cypriots will be able to live work and travel in
their own country without the fear of getting killed, or beat to death,
as we recently saw with Isaac and Solomou from The Turkish army and settlers
on those recent events.

Subject: need for your help and information
Dear sir,
I am a MBA student in T.R.N.C., (was graduated from business
administration, Bogazici university). I am trying to prepare a project about the foreign trade of T.R.N.C., and also trying to figure out
the "assessments of selected Foreign Suppliers by Cyprus importers: Implications for Exporters" . In order to figure out these I have to
first know which companies are we importing with. So I would be glad
if you find any information which would be helpfull for me.... Thank you very much,
Yours sincerely!

Hello,
Your North Cyprus web site is very nice.
Might I suggest a URL you may consider linking to for the Cyprus Problem
Resource File, located at http://www.cypnet.com/.ncyprus/cyproblem/
It's "Voices from Turkish Cyprus" -- a web site I created with Turkish
Cypriot students at Eastern Mediterranean University when I was teaching there during the 1995-1996 academic year. The site includes information
from official sources and personal histories told by Turkish Cypriots
who have lived through the "ethnic cleansing" on Cyprus between 1955 and
1974.
Photos are also included.
"Voices from Turkish Cyprus" is located at
http://www.usfca.edu/~higginsj/tcvoices/
Thank you for your consideration.
Best wishes,
John Higgins

enhansed. My last time in
N. Cyprus was 1968. I have returned to the South a number of times but
I miss that special warmth
of the North! I hope to visit Kyrenia again soon and enjoy the North of
Cyprus which was such a great
pleasure for me in the past.
