I don't suppose there has been any international recognition
of NTRC, has there?

I looked at your pages which look good.
Comments:

* The Islam link needs changing as the Islam page has
   moved.
* There is not really much on the Bahai's of TRNC except
   for some links.

There was a nice interview with M.Salman in PAN Magazine
about Bahai's in TRNC which it would be  nice if you could
include at some point.

My name is Patrick Mulvany and I am a student at Baylor
University in Waco, Texas.  I am doing a research paper
for an ethno-political conflicts class, and my focus for the
paper is the Cypriot Turks.  I am concentrating on their
minority status on the island and on their struggle for
autonomy.  Also I will focus on the fact that they are a
group at risk.  Can you recommend any internet sites or
books in general that will provide information on the focus
of this paper?

Dear Mr. Senturk,

assalamu alaykum, I am assuming you are a Muslim like
myself. My name is Abdassalam Granger, from Colorado,
USA.  Allah's blessing on you this month of Ramadan.  I
was wondering, I'm assuming that you are either from
Cyprus, or very knowledgable on the country. Do you know,
or have you heard of, a great Alim and Muslim Saint named
Sheikh Muhammad Nazim al-Qubrisi?

He is from Cyprus, and known world-over as head of the
Naqshbandi Sufi Order.  If you do know him, or of him,
please share your knowledge of him with me.  I'm curious
to know what role he plays in the minds and hearts of
Turkish-Cypriots.

Thank you very much.

I guess not! Anyway, it doesn't matter since the whole
situation is temporary...

Never to forget.... someday the world and especially Turkey

It seems that bastards like you, cannot fit in their stupid
brain that you can never change truth. You know it very
well that lying on the Net is a good way to show your filthy
ideas protecting yourself from any danger of being asked
questions that reveal truth. How about the missing persons,
the enclaved, the refugees and their fortunes?

Unfortunately, your nation has always been barbaric and
backstabbing. I have many Turkish and Turkish Cypriot
friends who fortunately do not think like you. Fanatism is
always bad, but lying is worse.

The Occupied Part of Cyprus will never survive without
the Turkish money and, specially, will never become
independent. Turkish Cypriots are Cypriots with all the
rights to be so, but the same does not hold for the Turks.
I just hope that there will not be long until justice prevails.

I recently saw your pages on the "Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus" and I realised how pathetic you people
really are. What republic are you refering to you CLOWNS?
The one you self proclaimed without any world recognition?
The lands you occupy were taken by force from very highly
civilized people, and after fine Ottoman style, are now ruined
and regressing. A lot of people throughout the civilised world
watch what you did and continue to do to Cyprus. The time
will come once again when the Greeks or better yet the
Hellenes (yes the same ones that kicked your collective rears
throughout the ages) as well as all your neighbouring "friendly"
countries will turn on you. "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus"
indeed. You continue to be the laughing stock of the world,
because you are nothing but a backward bunch of miserable
clowns living in lands that belonged to the Greeks for millennia.
It is really sad that you actually think the world will recognise
your pitiful existence.

Have you ever thought of going back to "YOUR ANCESTRAL
LANDS" in the depths of Mongolia and leaving this part of the
world to the civilised people that it belongs to?

Can you or anybody else from your race tell the rest of the
world, via the WWW, what have you contributed to the
civilisation and progress of this planet? NO Please don't tell us...
let us guess, all the ancient ruins - marble statues, temples,
buildings, amphitheatres etc - in both Turkey and Cyprus are
from your Turkish ancestors. Are we correct? Well we tried to
help you but it is very difficult.

Lets face it, your barbaric country's M.O. is violence and
destruction, as far back as our human history goes. I am sure
you will not like this message very much because the truth
always bites.

I would really like to see a response to this message. Please
try to understand that there is no such thing as "The Turkish
Republic of Northern Cyprus" no matter what you and your
people say or do, but keep trying.

To anyone with the least bit of political savvy the propaganda
inherent in these pages is offensive, ill-contrived, and childishly
selective.  I am sure that I do not need to go into its deficiencies
and/or untruths, but I do have one question that I must pose.
Why don't you mention anywhere in these pages that Turkish
Cypriots themselves are fleeing the occupied area?

Why don't you mention that Turkish citizens are being
"imported" to fortify the population of the occupied area?
How does it feel to realize that the occupied area of Cyprus
can no longer be even remotely defended as a "haven" for
"persecuted" Turkish-Cypriots when many of those who
reside in these areas are not even Cypriot?

It is time for you to realize that there is no mysterious
reason which explains why only Turkey recognizes the
occupied area.  For every other single nation on this
earth, your "republic" does not exist.  I have read the
Turkish press-release page, and the ways in which your
government seeks to justify and eclipse its own brutality
is shocking.  Why do intelligent people believe such
propaganda?

Instead of investing such effort in maintaining a web
page that is so obviously an attempt to further Turkish
propaganda, your time might be better spent examining
the claims of your leaders.  Can you honestly say that
they are "protecting" you?  Do you honestly mean to
suggest that colonizing a land which is not Turkey's
amounts to a "humanitarian" effort?

Do you even comprehend that colonization is precisely
what the British inflicted on the island before its internal
conflict?  Are you such blind worshippers of Turkey's
hyper-military policy that any of these claims can seem
reasonable to you?

All I can say is this.  I am an American, but I vehemently
retain the right to critique and question my country's policies.
And I do so, often.  Can you honestly say that you have
that same freedom?  If you do not, then something is
honestly lacking in any information you might provide the
internet community.  Instead of offering yourself as a
tool for nationalistic propaganda, put your hand on your
heart and spend a few moments examining such claims.

If nothing else, ask yourself why no one else but the
Turkish defend the occupation.  Why, why, why?  If the
reasons for the occupation are as you say, then the world
community would be standing at your side.  If you had the
moral high-ground, as you claim, then no number of Greek
Cypriot arguments could convince the world otherwise.
But you do not.  And the world community does not stand
at your side.

You might want to think about that.

You must be dreaming a lot. Only someone with a vivid
imagination could even think to write the shit you write here
on this page. Face the facts. There isn't and there will never
be a so called "Republic of Northern Cyprus". It lives only in
your dreams. Whatever you say and whatever you do the
facts never change and the rest of the world is not stupid.

You have invaded Cyprus by forced, you killed innocent
people and war prisoners as your fat "leader" said, and
you live in places which have been Greek for centuries. You
are barbarians and everybody knows it.

I looked at your counterparts' homepage today, and I
can't believe the absurd notions they posted up there.
They went as far as saying that Turkey "committed
human rights violations against Turkish Cypriots," and
that Turkey was responsible for "ethnic-cleansing"...
hmm, I wonder if the Greek word for that is "enosis":)

At any rate, I sympathize all to well with your dilemma.
Good luck with your project, take care,

I really appreciate that someone is putting the energy to
have some great info about Kibris on the internet.

The problem that I find is it is usually difficult to get this
page.  Maybe it's because the network traffic.

The other thing is if there is a way to have news more
recent, it would be greatly appreciated.

Once more, thanks very much for this great page. I think
it's one of the best about our beautiful country.

Merhaba,

I am calling from N. Cyprus, G.Magusa. I am an instructor
in the department of computer engineering, Eastern
Mediterranean University (EMU). First of all, I would like to
congratulate you and your friends contributed to this great
work.

Yesterday, I tried to access the closest mirror in the Middle
East Technical University (METU), Ankara; but a message,
something like "no data in the server" appeared. I sent a
message to the guy maintaining. Then, I tried to access to
the server in the University of Bradford, but I could not find
the path. Fortunately made out to access the other mirror in
the Bilkent University, Ankara and I read all the user
comments up to now. They show, both positive and negative
comments, how your work is great. I have been in N. Cyprus
for three years. I came here for my sabbatical from METU,
Ankara as a lot of members of faculty. There are quite a few
foreign members of staff from the USA, France, Russia,
England, Poland, Turkey, Azerbaycan, Kazakistan, Pakistan,
Iran, India, Canada, Australia, Germany, Italy, and even one
from Greece. The student composition is also multinational.

We all are greatly impressed by your beautiful country, the
hospitality and kindness of your people, as well as a great
university environment.

In our department, there are several Turkish Cypriot students
would like to take a part in your work.  I would also be pleased
to contributeand help the page. With a French faculty member,
we go spearfishing in weekends. We know all the N.Cyprus cost
step by step, and the fish are incredible. We can arrange a link
to  provide information on spearfishing in N. Cyprus, as the first step.Hoping to hearing from you soon.

Bye the way, I have noticed some very venomous messages
the N. Cyprus Web Page.  In particular from Greeks.

Is there a rational and civilised discussion forum available ?
I was caught up in the troubles there when I was little and
know first-hand what it was like before Turkey intervened.

I returned to Cyprus last year, for the first time since 1968.
When I was there , my father gave me a book written by an
American historian, called "The Road to Bellapais".  I was
shocked to read of so many awful things (most recorded by
the UN) that had happened even before I was borne.

Anyway, best wishes with your endeavors.

She's interested in family history concering her uncle
Hilmi Fuad, son of Mustafa Fuad Bey, who I understand was
once the chief justice of Cyprus. The various Fuad children
became lawyers in several parts of the world (Uganda,
Australia, Hong Kong) while Hilmi ran away to America to
avoid becoming a lawyer himself. He died a couple of years
ago. Any tips on the history of this family would be

What an absolutely amazing site! Can't believe that its all
the work of one person - you certainly know your stuff.
Well done! Me? Well I'm just an individual with good Turkish
friends. We are going to Cyprus (North of course) ;) later this
year and I was just surfing about for some info when I fell
upon your site. Well now I don't need to look at any others I
think as you have covered just about every topic imaginable.

One thing though - I'm trying to convince those of my mates
that will be staying there to get connected so do you have
any comments about the level of service and ISP's out there?
Once again congratulations on such a comprehensive and
interesting site, my *full* respect,

AOL do not away such mails.

I suggest you delete offensive comments, we can take Critism, but

Hi there!

I happened to visit the "North Cyprus" homepage of yours. Very
well organized, well done. I did not have the time at the moment
to read it through in detail but I will do so as soon as I can.

The main reason I'm writing to you is to find out whether you are
willing to discuss the Cyprus conflict with me. And the basic question
is:

HOW CAN TURKISH POLICY BE SO VIOLENT? IN 1996, WHEN PEOPLE
ARE EDUCATED AND ASK FOR DEMOCRACY, HUMAN RIGHTS,
DEVELOPMENT, CULTURE, WHY TURKEY ALWAYS USE GUNS INSTEAD
OF SPEECH?

I am of Greek origin and I would like to hear a straight forward
opinion from an educated Turkish-Cypriot like you.

I'd like to inform you that I have no intention to fight but simply to
talk. Many of my friends here in Liverpool are Turks and I lack any
nationalistic ideas. I have the dream of Greeks and Turks shaking
hands and live together peacefully. I hope that Turks and Greeks are
wise enough not to get into the trap that American and German weapon
industries have set (remember the former Yougoslavia war of madness).

I am waiting to hearing from you. akis

Dear Yashar,I visited again the NCYPRUS page today and read the
modern history chapter. I understand the Turkish-Cypriot minority
suffered discrimination and violence from a certain part of military-
influenced psycotic Greek-Cypriots. I may accept the Turkish invasion
in 1974 as a try of Turkey to protect its people (although, dear friend,
you may be well aware that this is politics and politics are intrested on
money, power and influence; not humans). However, this attack was
followed by severe crimes against Greek-Cypriot civilians, which cannot
be by any means attributed as "things which happen in a war". In addition,
after so many years Turkey has done nothing to show "good will". Turkey
always gives military solutions to its problems (see Curds for example).

In all these years of the Greek-Turkish conflict not a single Turk has
been killed by Greeks (if I am wrong please correct me) as opposed to
some tens of Greek deaths by Turkish troops (and para-military civilians).

I assure you that you are ABSOLUTELY SAFE to demonstrate in Omonia
square in Athens supporting your opinion as a Turkish-Cypriot. This is the
definition of DEMOCRACY, which is missing from the Turkish Governing
Class today. I have spoken to a lot of Turkish friends of mine and I have
taken the same opinion: you are not permitted to confront the Government
in Turkey. Isn't it so my friend?

I hope that one day all non-Cypriot troops (including Greek, Turkish and
British) will leave the Island.

You know, I like peace, I enjoy living, working and having fun. But I am
afraid that one day this imperialistic military-influenced Turkish
Goverment will drag me into a paranoic war, to accomplish the dream of a
New Ottoman Empire.

I know Greek goverments are far awy from beiing right and they are
equally responsible for this crisis. But at least, they don't want war,
while I am convinced that Turkish Goverment CANNOT WAIT the time that
they find a good excuse to start a war.

Anyway, my friend, we "the people" have nothing to win from such
conflicts. That's way I am working hard to fight Greek and Turkish
nationalists and fanatics who are thirsty for blood, and make friends
who want Turks and Greeks to leave in peace.

Have a nice day
Lakis

Hello,
I'm Greg Fleming and this is the first time that I've sent an
e-mail message to anyone like this. I have had an interest in the
TRNC for quite a long time (I really like the whole island actually, but
I have never had a chance to obtain a Turkish view of the situation. I
would like to exchange a friendly dialogue with you and hope that you
feel likewise. I feel that one can disagree without being disagreeable,
as it were and that I have a lot to learn from you.  I have done some
reading on the issues on the 'net but I think that people to people
exchange makes things clearer and puts things in a better perspective. I
do believe we can put principles above personalities. I may ask questions
that may seem provocative but I will always preface them with the utmost
discretion and tact, please bear with my ignorance as a westerner and
remember that I have only been exposed to a western point of view on
these matters.

My e-mail address is: GregFleming@ juno.com .

I sincerely hope to hear from you soon.

Dear Sir
I have just been scanning your web pages dedicated to the illegal Turkish
Republic of Northern Cyprus with great interest.  I am, as a Byzantinist,
well aware of the hatred that exists between the Turks and the Greeks and
of the historical basis for them.  However, the information you present on
your page as to the current situation is both misleading and innaccurate.
I have recently visited Northern Cyprus and, believe me, it is no
'paradise'.  It is a decaying mess.

And your comments in the many articles about the Cyprus 'problem'
would be more convincing if there were not so many desecrated Christian
churches littered about the countryside.

Desecrated graves and violated churches do not really go hand in hand with
Greek and Turkish unrest - it harks back to the golden age of Islamic
Ottoman imperialism.  I believe that in Cyprus we are seeing the events of
1453 relived, only now the Turks would seem to be a godless people.
Of course, I realise that there are Turkish answers to all objections, and
while both the UN and international governments turn a blind eye the
murder of Greek-Cypriots by the Turkish aggressors will continue apace.
Can you honestly tell me that in the modern 'civilised' world an act of
naked aggression such as the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 can be
justified?  It's interesting that when an Islamic country,

Bosnia-Herzegovina, was the subject of such an act, the whole world turned
against the Christian Serbs.  There is clearly a deeper pattern to this,
and one that has nothing to do with national boundaries.  Only Christ can
save and the Turkish killing of Greeks, overtly Christian, and the
desecration of Christian churches is clear evidence of their fear of thetruth.

This is not a personal attack, although it may seem like one.  I speak as
a Christian who sees darkness descending on the world.  I would be very
happy to talk to you about this further should you wish to do so.

Yours sincerely
Martin Dench

I saw some stupid racist comments in your comments page.

Well done for showing them - they speak for themselves and
whilst it is sad to see the rubbish some of them say and it can
only support the continuation of the 'divide', I do hope you will
continue to publish letters from the Greek side.

It would be good to see the country free itself from it's problems
and this must surely start with a dialog between Cypriots. Perhaps
the Net is a place where this can happen?

Whatever happens, please keep your part of the country free from the dreadful exploitation and hotels all along the coast which is affecting the South, and look after your lovely environment.

As a Greek Cypriot it saddens me that you are allowed to publish such lies and propaganda.  Why do you think real Turkish Cypriots left Cyprus? Because even they see the evil in the Turkish regime.  You are right...Northern Cyprus a corner of the earth touched by heaven, but the Turkish regime has destroyed it.

You talk about history...what history? It's not yours...you are not Cypriot and never will be a Cypriot.  Thanks to the occupation I will never have the honour of seeing where my parents were born or visiting the beautiful sites that you use to make your filthy money by attracting tourists.  i am not naive enough to think that any of my words will make a difference, but I am not humble enough to shut up.  In good time, life will make it's full circle and all those who committed crimes will get their due punishment.  In the meantime, I'll wait...patiently...leaving things in the hands of God.

Also I would like to refer to the so called Republic of Northern Cyprus. You already know that there is ONLY one recognised state nowadays and that is the "REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS" where both Turkish-Cypriots and Greek-Cypriots must live peacefully together. I would like you to omit any information considering the so called "TRNC", so that foreign people visiting your homepage will not read misleading information about Cyprus. Subject: Northern Cyprus Homepage

Dear Yashar,

I came across your Web Site about the northern part of Cyprus a few days ago. It was quite an opportunity for me to check out what "the other side "is opposing against the Greek-Cypriot arguments. I was also quite curious to see the comments concerning this page. It is noticeable that comments don't go all the way to the Imia incident. And, needless to say, not a word about what happened across the buffer zone last August in Cyprus.

It is in my intensions to try to set up a (as calm as possible) conversation about the matter, since you seem to provide grounds for discussion. This discussion will definitely not be within the morality and spirit of a few letters you received by a bunch of Greek persons, which simply displays the very level of their culture. In contrast with some other people, I don't think that Internet should be "censored" in a sense, not allowing everyone's opinion to be put against the other's point of view.

Opinion however, not historical distortion. And one can firmly support that, Turkey's intervention in Cyprus in 1974 was definitely not a peace-keeping operation. You cannot say that a peace-keeping operation can end up with some 200000 refuges and scores of
violations of human rights and Geneva's Treaty declarations. A piece-keeping operation is carried out for solving problems and softening the pain of people that suffer, not creating exponentially larger ones. You are of course right that Cyprus had to face serious problems at that time. A Greek junta tried to impose its position by attempting a military coup in the island and putting a mad man in charge. However, in my opinion, this was exactly what Turkey was waiting for to dynamically intervene, and not the last drop that a glass of water could stand.

The previous situation was not exactly what you described. It is true that Turkish-Cypriots had a tiny share in the island's industrial, commercial or cultural presence. This is not however because those people lived in a climate of terror and fear for their lives. The answer can be found to the fact, and this is what history provides, that in any case Greek- and Turkish-inherited citizens were living in peace (or temporary peace) the Greek element had to exhibit scores of achievements against a poor, fragile progress report of the other side. Just think of Istanbul (Constantinople). Before 1955 (you must know why I particularly refer to that very year) there were Greek industries in the city, Greek export firms, Greek elementary and High Schools, colleges and in general there was a live and significant Greek component present in all aspects of city's life, although the population of a Greek origin was only a small portion of Turkish
population. It seems that Turkey could not stand that. You can't deny what happened in Constantinople (Istanbul) at the night of 6-7 September 1955; there is a wealth of photographic evidence, documents and foreign press releases that pinpoint the intensity of Turkish vandalisms carried out with the tolerance and, in some cases, with the contribution of local authorities. Think of Izmir (Smyrna) before and after 1922. If an army has been defeated and leaves a city defenceless, the conqueror does not need to burn the city down to its foundations or to apply massive massacres to the city's unarmed population. Those crimes however had to be done to vanish any faint remnant of a 2-3 millennia strong presence of Hellenism in the area despite centuries of Ottoman Empire occupation.

Anyhow, I'm going far away; our matter of discussion is Cyprus. Forgive me but I can't rely neither on what you mention about "secret agreements" or "secret promises" of Archbishop Makarios to eliminate Turkish-Cypriot community nor to memories of British ex-officials (given the role of Britain in Cyprus), the reason being simply that, there is NO handy evidence of all those accusations, in contrast with piles of documents, photographic material and press releases
concerning the examples I have brought up to you.

Let me now focus on 1974 and later than that. There was a military coup in Cyprus, attempting to put in charge a pure lunity, Nicholaos Sampson, who indeed retained power for a few days. Those days everything happened; Turkish dynamic interference, attempts for Makarios' extermination, everything. The general idea of what you present is that Turkey had to intervene to protect the lives of the Turkish Cypriots who were facing fatal danger. Please tell me though, is it possible that Makarios and junta shared common plans to exterminate Turkish-Cypriot community and a coup against Makarios was organised at the same time? It does not make sense to me. And please, don't say that Makarios faced no danger from the junta; his chopper was repeatedly shot in his way to Paphos from Nicosia; rumours had been spread that Archbishop was dead. He was later exiled in Madagascar. Junta was busy trying to exterminate its own political opponents, instead of applying violence to Turkish-Cypriots. Those democratic citizens had junta was intended to kill, were all to the last ethnic Greeks and Greek-Cypriots (a fact that you also acknowledge, recalling the press releases you provide).

So, I don't think that Turkey's invasion (the word that gives the full meaning of the facts) was an  unavoidable consequence of Greece's intervention. In contrast, I strongly believe that junta's attempts were carried out to make things easier for the Turkish side. I have a number of arguments to support this. First, together with the successful coup, a number of fanatic Greek officers came from the mainland to help local stratocrats in exterminating democratic and liberal citizens. However, although Turkish invasion was more than visible (even profound) NO Greek army was transferred to Cyprus, apart from a few meaningless units! Even after the invasion, NO Greek army arrived to join Cyprus' National Guard. And even within National Guard, there was a systematic attempt to eliminate resistance against Turkish forces; in other words orders were given NOT to resist or to exchange fires! Resistance was carried out only by a few isolated cores of soldiers who could not stand what they were seeing. There is the graphical case of a Cypriot sergeant (I'm sorry I can't recall his name, but I can find it for you if you like) that was
repeatedly shot in both legs by Greek officers because he tried to order his unit to be engaged in a battle with Turkish invaders...

The Greek army that was supposed to be carried in Cyprus, remained stuck in Dodecanese islands. And what army we're talking about? They almost had no guns and rifles! You know, I happen to be born in one of those islands in the Eastern Aegean, just 6-7 miles away from the Asia Minor's coast. I lively remember those facts; I lively remember that there was one rifle to be shared between 5-6 Greek soldiers. The army that was carried to the islands was, shortly after the invasion, and the cease-fire agreement in Cyprus, carried back to the mainland, not through Piraeus port or any other major Greek port, but through Volos' harbour in the midnight to avoid a public cry-out. This was indeed a tragedy, a question remains though about who was standing behind this. Just be informed that every year during the celebrations of junta's collapse, there is a symbolic protest march towards the American Embassy in Athens; needless to refer to the scope of this march. The role of the American factor in the area during the period we are talking about is acknowledged by almost every historian, of Greek or non-Greek origin.

Returning back to Turkey's invasion, it's well-known what happened later. The invasion ended up when only a part of the island was occupied, not because of Turkish intensions but rather because of an international cry-out and UN's involvement. Sampson's junta fell apart as well, and democratic voices were able to be heard again from the divided island. Athens' junta was about to fall apart too, under the pressure of its crime.

During the years that came, piles of press releases concerning the situation in the occupied territories were accumulated to the already existing documents. I can send you dozens of them, if you like, but I guess you have already seen enough of them. Severe violations of human rights, murders, rapes, violations of property rights, vandalisms and destruction of Hellenic and Byzantine monuments; all state-of-the-art proofs of a strong Hellenic presence in the area. Time was not able of erasing those masterpieces for thousands of years, but they were destroyed or severely damaged in only a few years' time. Photo archives, available in the Web, give a magnitude of those vandalisms, heritage of all humanity. Military camps were set up on remnants of ancient temples and Byzantine churches, sacrilege after sacrilege committed by stiffs of barbarians. No wonder why the "declaration of the establishment of the independent state of Northern Cyprus" in 1983 found no supporters worldwide, except from Turkey itself and, later, Pakistan. And no one can ignore the systematic effort of Turkey to completely Turkify those areas by giving Turkish names to cities and villages or, more importantly, to alter the demographic ratio of the island's population, by allowing thousands of settlers from the mainland to come and make use of abandoned (or abandoned under the use of force) Greek-Cypriot properties. Those settlers didn't even know where Cyprus was located before! And to many of those Greek-Cypriots who decided to stay with their holdings, despite the climate of terror, a ridiculous 15 minute deadline was given to empty their houses and leave away (I can send you press reports on this, too). Please tell me, have you ever seen films and documentaries of European Media Networks concerning tours of reporter's groups in the northern part of Cyprus? I happen to have seen some of them. I won't stick on words; I'll just try to explain what I saw. I saw people (Turkish Cypriots or so-called "Turkish-Cypriots") to be afraid of facing cameras. I saw locked doors and windows closing in every direction cameras were showing at. And I saw remnants of the invasion, even in inhabited areas, even scars from bullets on some walls. Years after the invasion, no effort had been carried out to diminish that (traumatic to everyone) signs. And what's on the other side? Free Cyprus, democratic and able of standing on its own feet, with a wealthy economy and 1.5% inflation, to be compared with some 70% or even more, in the opposite side (I'm referring to Turkey's inflation as a whole, because I cannot discriminate between Turkey and "Northern Cyprus"). It seemed to me that your fellow citizens are afraid. They're afraid of loosing what they don't deserve to enjoy. They're afraid of going back to where they came from, just as simple as that. And to me, the enormous difference between the two parts, shines as an additional brilliant example of the progressive spirit of Cypriots, independent and free, in profound lack of comparison with the army-holded other part where every aspect of life is still controlled by stratocrats (your "touched-by-heaven" land is one of the more militarised areas in the world, and this should be made CLEAR in all directions). Because you know better than me, I assume, that the factor that moves the filaments behind Turkey's political scenery is the army; that's the real governor, and if Turkey is unified and extends to all this area that maps illustrate, it's because of the use of armed force. Every time a democratically elected government has tried to bring Turkey out of the dead-end it faces, army is there to prevent this major challenge. Turkey is in war with herself, in my opinion. A civil war in the east, an evolving genocide against Turkish citizens of Kurdish heritage (which you call "terrorists" by the way, because they hopelessly fight to make their own voice heard) and poor bilateral relations with almost every neighbouring country (think of Syria, Iraq, Iran, Russia and Armenia) cannot be more adequate examples of the fact that the Turkish people is not independent and definitely not democratically ruled.

You have your own doubts on what I'm talking about, I guess. I'll bring one last example however; I hope you'll be willing to discuss this, too. In my opinion, it directly reflects the morality and the democratic sensitivity of what you call your leaders. I'm referring on what happened on Cyprus last August, trying to keep myself calm. Again I won't stick in words; I'll just comment on the pictures and the feelings a whole planet sensed in front of TV screens. Words cannot sufficiently describe those feelings, I will try to do so, nevertheless. Please tell me, where in this damned world "police" forces are acting side by side with fanatic citizens? Citizens that are not even Turkish-Cypriots but were transferred from the mainland
especially for this purpose. Wooden sticks, stones and bare guns are trying to make your voice known to the world. Murders by furious crowds in front of TV cameras and foreign reporters are trying to carry your feelings about independence and democracy (?) worldwide.  And your "President", with joey and proudness because of his Turkish nationality, was inspecting the offence against human dignity and civilized world.

Twenty people, armed with sticks and rocks, beating ONE defenceless unarmed demonstrator, lying down unconscious with his sculp broken in pieces. And guns firing against a (also unarmed) demonstrator, shooting him FIVE times, as if one bullet was not enough of fully exposing your "leaders'" democratic standards.

What a threat can be for your "Republic" and public safety two unarmed demonstrators and a middle-aged pensioner collecting snails or whatever with his son-in-law (shot in cold blood two months later) !!!! And then, your "President", rewarding the man in charge of extremists (Grey Wolves you prefer to call them), inaugurating him as "Minister of Energy and Agriculture"... A recognized murderer as a "Minister" of a so-called "Government"! He later, refusing his involvement, did not omit to mention that those demonstrators were pigs that don't deserve to live!!! Please tell me, sincerely, what do you expect to achieve with such kind of actions? The only achievement of yours (please note that by using the word "you" or "yours" I don't refer to you personally, but to your "country" as a whole) is further political isolation and awakening of feelings that stand far away from actions counted to civilised human beings.

And it is quite an paradox what you try to prove, namely that Greek- and Turkish-Cypriots cannot live in harmony, using such means, namely bringing non-Cypriot Turkish nationalists to show this to the rest of the world!

I hope you too don't welcome those expressions of
cowardish and rough brutality, elements that, unfortunately,
have always be demonstrated by your own country in the
worst of ways. It's evident that you are a highly-educated
individual, who prefers to discuss about such matters, instead
of acting violently. I do too, although I hardly brought myself
back to control when I witnessed those tragic incidents with
my own eyes... I also think that those uncontrolled crowds
deserve nothing more than the exact reward of their own
actions. There is a stream of Turkish intellectuals, journalists
and writers that rises its voice against all those actions
stressing at the same time the depression of free speech in
Turkey. Members of the Turkish Parliament are in prison
because they have committed the despicable crime of
supporting Kurds, and Turkish prisoners were involved in
the most desperate of strikes, that of refusing to eat, to
force the state acting in a more democratic and civilised way
(eleven of them died of starvation, you must know). And of
course, dozens of political refuges (including famous Turkish
personalities like writer Asiz Nazim) that seek for an asylum
in nearby Aegean islands, reaching them with any available
means, from rubber boats to life jackets. Many of them have
been drawn in the Aegean in their effort to make their lives
better by moving in a free country. I would really like to have
your opinion about those matters.

Concluding, since you are an Internet user, I would like to
give you an address of a Web site in Greece. Again, no
comments, no words. Just take a look at the pictures.
A rare photo archive that grafically demonstrates some of
your countrie's action during  this century. The pictures are
shocking and include explicit violence, but they definitely
worth to be seen by any mature individual, whatever his
(or her) nationality. The site belongs to the Democritus
University of Thrace and is located at the address
"http://www.cc.duth.gr/whatsnew.html"). And, for the love
of God, (Allah or Christ, no  matter what), please try to
provide me with similar pictures that illustrate Greek actions
against Turkish people, or people of whatever nationality. I
never had the chance to  view such a material; I don't think
it exists. I would appreciate if you could change my opinion...

Thank you in advance for your patience to read this long letter.
Take your time to reply, if you want. I would be happy to have
your reply on this, sometime. If you are not willing to reply
though, I would appreciate if you could put this letter somewhere
in your comments' section so that interested people from both
sides can see this point of view and reply if they want to.

Sincerely,
Manolis

I hope  you realize that you are promoting a part of an
island that has been under Turkish occupation since 1974.
I do not believe that I have to go into the logistics, but I can
assure you that although I grew up in Limassol having
several Turkish Cypriots as friends and never having
problems.

Promoting an occupied region of a nation for
profits from stolen land and property is not FAIR.  I am not
politically minded but I am talking about fairness and human
rights. I dream of the day that we can all live on this small
island as one-people once again, but the way we are going
I cant be very optimistic.
