President of North Cyprus HE Mr Mehmet Ali TalatMr. Mehmet Ali Talat was born on 6 July 1952 in Kyrenia. He completed his secondary education in Cyprus.

Talat continued his further education in Turkey. He gained his M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering Middle East Technical University in 1977. Talat also completed his M.A. degree in International Relations at the Eastern Mediterranean University in Cyprus.

He was assigned as the Minister of Education and Culture in the first Democrat Party (DP) – Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Coalition Government, formed after the Parliamentary Elections held in December 1993. He continued in the same position during the second DP-CTP coalition Government. In the third DP-CTP coalition Government he was assigned as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State.

He was elected as the leader of the Republican Turkish Party in the 14th Convention of the Party, which was held on 14 January 1996. He was elected as a Member of Parliament from Nicosia respectively in the 1998 and 2003 Parliamentary Elections, and in the early elections held on 20 February 2005.

After the first CTP-DP Coalition government formed on 13 January 2004, he formed the second CTP-DP Coalition government on 8 March 2005, which continued until the last Presidential Elections.

Mehmet Ali Talat, who was elected President in the first round of elections on 20 April 2005 is married and has a son and a daughter.
