In
this classic study of Nationalism & the Cyprus Dispute academic Dr. Zenon
Stavirnides became one of the first post-war scholars to make a concerted effort
to approach the history and causes of the conflict in Cyprus from a balanced
standpoint.
Not all were happy with the results, the outcome being at times critical of both
Turkish and Greek Cypriots, as well as of the role of foreign powers.
Dr. Stavrinides, himself of
Greek Cypriot origins, gained a first class honours degree in philosophy at
London University, and research degrees from Leeds & Cambridge Universities. He
is currently a university lecturer and as a pioneering leader of the Association
for Cypriot, Greek & Turkish Affairs, he has played an important role over the
years in encouraging dialogue between the two Cypriot communities & provided a
valuable forum in the UK where diplomats & academics have informally discussed
Graeco-Turkish relations.
In this compact study Dr.
Stavrinides outlines his arguments in the following 6 analytical chapters:
I – A TRADITION OF CONFLICT
II - THE DEVELOPMENT OF NATIONALISM IN CYPRUS
III – ETHNIC CONFLICT WITHIN THE CYPRIOT STATE
IV – CONFLICT BETWEEN THE STATES OF CYPRUS, 1963-1974
V – THE AFTERMATH OF THE TURKISH INVASION
VI – CONCLUSIONS & PROSPECTS
