The Skyy Prize Of San Francisco Film Festival Goes To A Turkish Film: Somersault In A Coffin

San Francisco Film Festival sets records, awards new prizes in 41st year

San Francisco Examiner

The San Francisco International Film Festival, which closed Thursday night, reports a record attendance of more than 78,000 for this year's 41st outing. That figure represents a 2.5 percent increase in attendance and 2.8 percent increase in ticket revenues, the festival says, as well as its 16th consecutive year of audience growth.

The Skyy Prize is a $10,000 cash award designed to help first-time directors find distribution. This year's winner, chosen from 15 nominees, is the Turkish-Cypriot film "Somersault in a Coffin," by Dervis Zaim, a drama examining Istanbul's underclass. Comments Skyy jury member Tony Rayns: "Given that the climate for distribution of foreign-language movies in North America keeps getting harder, we chose what we thought was the bravest and most innovative film in the "guerrilla style' used less constructively by so many other independent filmmakers."

Film Awards Conclude Record-Breaking Festival

San Francisco Chronicle

The 41st San Francisco International Film Festival ended yesterday with the announcement of record attendance: 78,000 people came to see its 174 films over a two-week period.

Festival prize-winners also were announced. The $10,000 Skyy Prize was awarded to Turkish-Cypriot director Dervis Zaim for the neorealist drama ``Somersault in a Coffin,'' about a homeless Istanbul alcoholic.

The film was selected by a jury from among 15 first features that had not yet acquired U.S. distribution.
