The settlement around Lefke is
very scattered, this is due to different topography of the region.
While the population of Lefke was
8000 in 1957 it decreased down to 5000 in 1974.One of the reasons for the
decreasing population was the low productivity in mines cooperation on one hand, the
machineries took the job positions over from the people's hands on the
other hand.
After losing their jobs many
people had to leave Cyprus for the other countries. At one time when CMC was at
its best the population of town has increased to 8000 and many homes were built
for the people to live in. In 1974 was the year when the CMC was closed down many
other people decided to live for different places for employment.
